So I'm in the midst of taking a couple days off of SIFF, but in the meantime, I've got some scoops. If you love seeing celebs at screenings (admit it: there's a celebrity whore in all of us), here are some peeps in town this week that you may have heard of (and their respective movie screening they'll be attending): Doug Pray, director of Art & Copy Iben Hjejle, actor in The Escape Barbet Schroeder, director of Inju, the Beast…

Many moons ago at the now defunct Women in Cinema film festival (also put on by SIFF), I saw this weird amazing movie from Argentina called La Ciénaga. I have never met anyone since who had even heard of the film, so I was thrilled when SIFF decided to honor its director Lucrecia Martel as one of its Emerging Masters this year. I snapped up a ticket to her new film The Headless Woman (La mujer sin cabeza) (6/8) as…

You may have noticed my SIFF'n slowing down. I apologize in advance because it will continue this way through the next week, as my regular job is sucking all of my time. But still, I persevere, and will be catching flicks when I can (and hopefully pile them on in the last week). That said, after a couple-days break from SIFF'n, I caught the Gay-La presentation of Patrik Age 1.5 (Patrik 1,5) (6/8) from Sweden. I had heard good buzz…

But the poor ticketing tables look so sparse and lonely with no goodies to pick through (and I think that the stark silhouette theme of the marketing would have looked cool on T's). Oh well. I'll bet…

What I love about going to movies at the Uptown or SIFF Cinema the first weekend of SIFF is the fact that the Folklife Festival is going on all Memorial Weekend at the Seattle Center, right next door. Brave the mobs (and the mobs were sure out the last couple days because of the great weather), and you can get tasty festival food on your breaks and enjoy all the performers that are jamming on the lawn in little groups.…

So this is just like Seattle: We've had a horrifically crappy spring, full of rain and cold and constant gray skies. Sure there were teasers of a couple weekends in the upper 60s and occasional 70s, then it's back to 40 degree, dousing wet mornings. Until SIFF starts, of course. I'm not complaining, mind you, to see a week-long forecast starting with Memorial Day weekend, showing a string of beautiful sunny days averaging about 70 degrees. No, not complaining at…
