Some days at Hot Docs are better than others. They’re all pretty great, but some are weirdly extra-wonderful. That was today. Though the weather was once again grey, wet and dismal, I headed out early to get in line at the Bader. My first film of the day was The Case Against 8 (8/8), and I was anticipating a huge turnout. I arrived just after 9:30am to find a very very small lineup, and my pals standing right at the…

Here’s (one of the many reasons) why I love Hot Docs: even on a Tuesday afternoon in April, when it’s windy and cold and POURING and generally miserable, weather-wise, screenings are packed-to-the-rafters full. Every film I attended yesterday was sold out – even the ones that required lining up outdoors in that soak-you-through-and-through rain. Warms my heart and, I would guess, makes the filmmakers and fest programmers very happy. Thankfully, there was no line when I arrived (wet from the…

SEATTLE -- April 28, 2014 -- Seattle International Film Festival announced today that Laura Dern and Chiwetel Ejiofor will be the two guests honored with Tribute awards for Outstanding Achievement in Acting at the 40th annual Festival (May 15 - June 8, 2014). Both are scheduled to appear at special events featuring screenings of significant examples of their work, award presentations, Q&A sessions, and intimate receptions. Each year, SIFF names Tribute honorees who exemplify what's great about acting and film…

Today was a day of rampant indecision. I couldn’t decide what to see. Screening times conflicted, and there wasn’t enough time between certain films to grab something to eat... or arrive at the next venue without having had to perform wind sprints along University Avenue. I think I must have changed my schedule at least a half-dozen times and, even then, when I finally thought I’d nailed it all down and headed out for my screenings, I wasn’t entirely sure…

Ah, I love a day filled with awesome documentaries! And, happily, today was just such a day. After some commuting hiccups (I’ve moved to a new place since last year’s fest, so I haven’t quite nailed the bus-and-subway timing yet), I sat down to the first screening of the day. And, though I really enjoyed Mission Blue (6/8) – which is part biography (of renowned oceanographer Sylvia Earle and her lifetime of work) and part eco-doc (about the plight of…
