SEATTLE -- April 28, 2014 -- Seattle International Film Festival announced today that Laura Dern and Chiwetel Ejiofor will be the two guests honored with Tribute awards for Outstanding Achievement in Acting at the 40th annual Festival (May 15 - June 8, 2014). Today, I did something that I’ve never before done in my 20+ years of festival-going: I forgot my press pass at home. I make a point of never taking it out of my bag during a festival, so that I’m always assured it’ll be with me when I need it, but – in what I can only assume was a fleeting moment of fatigue-induced delirium – I took it out of my bag this morning (to rearrange the bag contents)...…

Hooray! Time to finally start seeing some documentaries! My work schedule this spring has been such that attending any pre-festival screenings was impossible (which pained me greatly, because I missed more than a dozen opportunities to check out films in advance), so when I headed out today for my inaugural day of film-going at Hot Docs 2014, I was more than ready to get my butt in a theatre seat. Let me preface this by saying: I do not like…

It seems like just yesterday I was writing about Gideon’s Army and my 2013 Hot Docs experience drawing to a close, yet here it is: time for the 2014 festival to get underway! And I’m not exaggerating when I say I look forward to Hot Docs all year long – it’s blocked off on my calendar as soon as the dates are announced and, every year, I am practically giddy with anticipation by the time opening night rolls around. Hot Docs…
