March 16, 2026—Another year, another Oscar ceremony! In a year that’s been a distressing firehose of a news cycle, it was kind of a relief to have a relatively benign, mildly enjoyable (though of course bloated) Oscar telecast for a change. Alas, I couldn’t host an Oscar party like usual this year, so I was unable to laugh and cry in person with my pals. Still, there’s a special joy in live-texting a friend during a broadcast, anticipating the inevitable comment-worthy moments.
Keeping things interesting, Oscar love was spread across several of the big nominees. Though some of the big awards landed as predicted (with One Battle After Another taking home Best Picture and Director, and the delightful Jessie Buckley winning Best Actress for her devastating performance in Hamnet), there were a few surprises. Amy Madigan continued her late-awards-season surge by winning Supporting Actress for her creepy Aunt Gladys in the horror hit Weapons, and absent Sean Penn won his third Oscar for his scene-stealing supporting role in One Battle. But when a humble and surprised Michael B. Jordan won Best Actor for Sinners, the joy of his peers in the theater absolutely exploded like a Hollywood group hug.
Luminous Anne Hathaway was paired with a sour and distracted Anna Wintour. Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. struggled to make their banter land. One poor winner wasted a solid ten seconds of his colleague’s speech time fishing for his glasses in his jacket. The reunited cast of Bridesmaids was glorious and needs to make another movie together immediately. There was even a tie to mess up everyone’s Oscar pool, with two different films (The Singers and Two People Exchanging Saliva) winning Best Live Action Short. (Kudos to presenter Kumail Nanjiani for slickly handling an extremely unusual situation with flair.)
Oh, and because it’s 2026, the year that keeps on giving (and it’s still so young!), we got an In Memoriam montage that was three times as long as usual, making it three times as brutally sad. In a year that took beloved stars like Robert Redford and Diane Keaton (both honored with special tributes from Barbra Streisand and Rachel McAdams, respectively), the tribute to Rob and Michelle Reiner—murdered by their son just a few months ago—was horrifically sad. The impact of seeing over a dozen stars onstage from his most iconic films was too much in every way.
Paul Thomas Anderson finally got an Oscar (rather three!) after almost a dozen previous nominations over nearly three decades, earning a well-deserved standing ovation in the Dolby Theatre. Ryan Coogler also took home his first Oscar, winning Original Screenplay for Sinners. And Ludwig Göransson is shaping up to be the next John Williams, with his astonishingly versatile musical stylings (the live performance of the soundtrack’s literal barn-burner blues song “Lie to Me” from Sinners was fantastic).
Overall, the Oscars were pretty good this year. I mean, unless you were shut out like 9-times nominated Marty Supreme (seems like there’s always one). Sorry, Timothée Chalamet, looks like you’ll still have to wait your turn.
