I'm one of Moviepie's staff writers, and I've been reviewing films and film festivals — including TIFF, the (now-defunct) Worldwide Short Film Festival, and Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival — here for more than 20 years. I'm based in Toronto, and although I'll sit through just about any genre (except horror), my absolute fave films are documentaries: I see 50+ at Hot Docs every year! That said, I've also seen You've Got Mail more than 100 times (a conservative estimate!) and quote from it almost daily.

Ostensibly, casting every bankable star in Hollywood in the same movie is a great idea. Who doesn’t love it when even the extras in a film turn out to be famous? The catch is that once you assemble an enormous cast of characters, you then have to develop those...

It’s beefy, both in running time and content, and filled from open to close with bad guys, good buys, flying bullets, violence, drugs, murder, chase sequences and some stellar acting from its two boy-movie superstars, Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe…all under the supervision of boy-movie megadirector Ridley Scott. Nevermind...

Not surprisingly, then, this would-be rom-com is neither romantic nor particularly funny, and is precisely the kind of movie you’d expect to hit screens at this cinematic dead-zone time of year. In short, it’s clunky, unfunny and largely charmless. Kristen Bell stars as Beth, a recently dumped art curator,...

Director Jon Amiel (The Core, ‘nuff said) has before him the life and work of Charles Darwin and could have easily made a movie about the theory of evolution – namely, where did it come from? What sparked the idea? But, rather than examine the hows of the man’s...

Bullock is Mary Horowitz, a crossword-puzzle writer for a Sacramento newspaper, who’s meant to be a quirky, socially inept intellectual but who, instead, comes off as an annoying and slightly deranged know-it-all whose use of $50 words rings distractingly false. Never mind that Bullock decides to play Mary with...

I’ll admit it: I’d been looking forward to this movie for months. Not only did it star current It Girl Amy Adams and the swoon-worthy Emily Blunt, but it was produced by Overture Films (my new fave company thanks to previous offerings like The Visitor and Henry Poole is...

I mean, I dramatically lowered my expectations before sitting down in the theater, and I knew the film probably wouldn’t be very good, but nothing prepared me for the pungent stinkiness of this frenetic, unfunny, obnoxious disaster. Robin Williams and John Travolta co-star as long-time best friends and sports-marketing...

It will surprise no one to learn that the “plot” of the movie is fairly thin – neutrinos from the sun have been heating up the Earth’s core, and it reaches its boiling point to coincide with the doomsday prophecies citing 2012 as the year the world goes kablooie....

Directed by Paul Weitz (In Good Company), the story revolves around teenager Darren Shan (Chris Massoglia), whose strait-laced, hum-drum life is turned inside out when a freak show rolls into town and he’s befriended by its headliner, vampire Larten Crepsley (Reilly). Before long, Darren becomes a newly minted half-vampire...

The season continues the quest to find the TURK and where it finally ends up in the puzzle, it builds on the mythology of Skynet’s attempts to further its development from the past and expands the notion that there are more that a few people who have come back...

If Friday’s theme was “girls behaving badly,” Saturday’s was most certainly “adoption.” I began with Mother and Child (7/8), the latest from writer-director Rodrigo García (Nine Lives, Things You Can Tell Just By Looking at Her) and easily his most accomplished film to date. García always crafts multiple-character stories...

Sometimes, when I select my TIFF films, I try to create some kind of theme, whether it be for the overall collection of screenings or just the movies I see on a given day. On Friday, I selected two films dealing with groups of teenaged girls – one set...
