Reviews by Linda

I'm the founder of Moviepie.com where I've written reviews for over two (!) decades. I'm a member of the Seattle Film Critics Society (SFCS) since 2022 and GALECA (the Society of LGBTQ+ Entertainment Critics Association) since 2025. I'm based in the Seattle area. My favorite films include Gone With the Wind, Purple Rain, and A Room With a View. I have a fondness for what I call "space stories" and movies with talking animals. I don't believe there is such a thing as a guilty pleasure movie. Own what you love!

The Whale

Brendan Fraser squeezes your caring heart in first trailer for ‘The Whale’

“Do you ever get the feeling that people are incapable of not caring?” The buzz for Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale, particularly Brendan Fraser’s lead performance, has been off the charts since its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival. Also starring Stranger Things‘ Sadie Sink and the fabulous Hong...

My Policeman

My Policeman (2022)

Harry Styles as an actor (so far, at least) is the type where you want to give him the benefit of the doubt, because (bless his heart) he’s a cutie and is taking on interesting roles. Unlike the gossip-soaked Don’t Worry Darling (that came to theaters with a whole...

Avatar: The Way of Water

‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ teases eye-popping visuals and awkward CGI smiles

Avatar may have made the most money ever, but I wasn’t not a fan. All flash with spray-cheese substance, the film went over-the-top with its remarkable visuals, leaving less than a comic book storyline remaining for the script. Honestly, I’m not very optimistic about Avatar: The Way of Water,...

Till

Till (2022)

If you have any sense of U.S. history, you’ll watch Till with an impending sense of doom. Emmett Till was a 14-year-old boy from Chicago that was lynched in a small Mississippi town while visiting his cousins the summer of 1955, an incident that exploded in the media and...

Freedom on Fire

SIFF DocFest 2022: The urgency of ‘Freedom on Fire’

The closing night film of SIFF DocFest 2022, Freedom on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom (7/8), has a complicated conundrum–it simultaneously feels both (distressingly) timely while being (heartbreakingly) out of date. Filmmaker Evgeny Afineevsky’s profile of the first months of Russia’s war on Ukraine is an astonishing and urgent...

Exposure (2022)

SIFF DocFest 2022: Two tales on ice

As someone who loves vacations in cold places, and bursts into tears during the title music for the Olympics (really, I do), there were a couple must-see chilly-themed films on my list for DocFest. Exposure (8/8) I love a good Arctic adventure–the more harrowing, the better (I’d much rather...

Good Night Oppt

‘Good Night Oppy’ profiles the sweet little Mars rover that could

I remember the “last words” that the Mars rover Opportunity broadcast to NASA in 2018: “My battery is low and it’s getting dark.” If that message didn’t make you want to burst into tears, thinking of this lonely little robot on another planet slowly going to sleep, well you...

Amsterdam (2022)

Amsterdam (2022)

In 1933 New York, two best friends (and veterans from World War I), find out that their beloved general from their battalion has died of mysterious circumstances on his way back from Europe. The general’s daughter (Taylor Swift, who–let’s say–quickly disappears before you can tire of her) requests the...

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

New Black Panther is (sorta) revealed in ‘Wakanda Forever’ trailer

In the new trailer for Black Panther: Wankanda Forever, we finally get a tease of how the story will acknowledge the death of Chadwick Boseman as the original Black Panther. By the end of the trailer (featuring, again, lots of badass women returning), a new female Black Panther appears,...

Bones and All - cropped

Timothée Chalamet teams up again with director Luca Guadagnino in ‘Bones and All’

A young woman (Taylor Russell) falls for a handsome drifter (Timothée Chalamet) and things quickly seem to get… bloody. From the new trailer for Bones and All, looks like behind sexy-boyfriend’s pretty face and floppy hair, is an unstable guy that has a penchant for slicing and dicing hapless...

Catherine Called Birdy (2022)

It’s the year 1291, and everything is about to change for young Catherine (Bella Ramsey), the spirited 14-year-old daughter of the lord and lady of the village of Stonebridge. Catherine, called Birdy for her collection of birds, had just gotten her period. Convinced she is dying (“The blood came...
