Reviews by Vickie

I'm one of Moviepie's staff writers, and I've been reviewing films and film festivals — including TIFF, the (now-defunct) Worldwide Short Film Festival, and Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival — here for more than 20 years. I'm based in Toronto, and although I'll sit through just about any genre (except horror), my absolute fave films are documentaries: I see 50+ at Hot Docs every year! That said, I've also seen You've Got Mail more than 100 times (a conservative estimate!) and quote from it almost daily.

TIFF 2009 #6: Moderation

Only one film on the docket yesterday – the documentary Cleanflix (7/8), which examines Utah-based companies that “sanitize” Hollywood films by editing out sex, nudity, profanity and violence. Co-directors Andrew James and Joshua Ligairi profile a number of shop owners, who explain their businesses and the demand for the...

TIFF 2009 #5: Dancers, Deception and a Debut

Yesterday, I found myself living my TIFF life of years gone by. That is to say: I saw three films in one day (still, not much compared to the four-a-day schedule I sometimes kept) and realized, by the end of the third screening, perhaps I don’t have the stamina...

TIFF 2009 #4: Memories

If I haven’t said it before, allow me to say it now: seeing one film a day is terribly relaxing. There’s no wild sprinting from one theater to another, no skipping meals, no end-of-day exhaustion. It’s the leisurely way to festival, and I have to say I may adopt...

TIFF 2009 #3: Soakers, Schoolgirls and Stupid Cell Phones

The festival’s been going for a few days, but my attendance has been somewhat thin. I tried to go to the Whip It! derby event at Yonge/Dundas Square on Sunday evening, which would have been my sole TIFFing of the weekend, but it was such a madhouse when I...

TIFF 2009 #2: A Stampede and Some Fine Line Wrangling

Today was the official start of my TIFF ’09 moviegoing and, to mark the occasion, I decided to walk to my inaugural screening. I chose a route right through the heart of festival central – Yorkville – and, thus, encountered not one but TWO celebrity swarmings en route to...

TIFF 2009 #1: Pre-fest screenings

TIFF officially kicks off tomorrow with the opening-night film, Creation, which is getting mixed buzz. I’ve picked up my tickets, and still have a few left to redeem. I remain undecided as to what I should see. It also seems that my festival downsizing has to do with more...

TIFF 2009: A Preamble

For those of you who have been Moviepie readers for a while, you’ll know that, for the past seven years, I’ve covered the Toronto International Film Festival extensively with an annual day-by-day diary. Well, that time of year has arrived once again but, unfortunately, coverage in 2009 will be...

Julie & Julia (2009)

Julie & Julia (2009)

It was not without some skepticism that I walked into the screening. How could director Nora Ephron – whose last big-screen outing was the universally panned Bewitched – turn a book about a blog into a movie? And how would she properly juggle the vastly different lives – lived...

(500) Days of Summer (2009)

(500) Days of Summer (2009)

The always-wonderful Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as Tom, a mopey greeting-card writer whose heart swells when he meets perky but distant secretary Summer (Zooey Deschanel). Tom wants to be in love and believes Summer is “the one”; Summer isn’t looking for anything serious and wants a no-strings-attached relationship with Tom....

WWSFF 2009 Wrap-Up

After getting off to a bit of a rocky start – day one at the Cumberland was a mess, organization-wise – the festival ran smoothly (if damply, due to rain) and I saw a wide-ranging spectrum of films. Some were great, some were boring, some were weird and some...

Year One (2009)

Year One (2009)

Much to my surprise and gradual glee, Year One never pretends to be anything other than a really low-brow comedy (and I mean that as a compliment!) aimed at making the audience belly laugh by whatever means necessary… even though it weaves some really clever evolution vs. creationism subtext...

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 (2009)

Washington is everyman Walter Garber, an NYC transit-control operator, who happens to be overseeing the system when hulking villain “Ryder” (John Travolta) and his henchmen commandeer a subway train and take its passengers hostage.  Demanding $10 million (plus one cent) from the mayor (James Gandolfini), Ryder gives Garber a...
