I'm one of Moviepie's staff writers, and I've been reviewing films and film festivals — including TIFF, the (now-defunct) Worldwide Short Film Festival, and Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival — here for more than 20 years. I'm based in Toronto, and although I'll sit through just about any genre (except horror), my absolute fave films are documentaries: I see 50+ at Hot Docs every year! That said, I've also seen You've Got Mail more than 100 times (a conservative estimate!) and quote from it almost daily.

Last night, I attended my inaugural screenings at HotDocs 2009, and I’m really hoping that the remainder of my festival experience goes a little more smoothly than night one did. The fest has some 150+ films unspooling over the next 10 days, and the schedule is filled to overflowing...

You have to know these things when you walk into this movie so you don’t expect more than it has to offer. No, it doesn’t feature the most convincing performances, and the script isn’t really anything new, but it’s executed with sweetness that makes you root for it. Writer-director...

Every December around this time, I sit down to make a list of all the films I’ve seen in the previous year so that I can craft my best-and-worst ‘Pie piece. I write them all down and put them under one of three headings: best, worst and other. Normally,...

Festival director claims he hasn’t heard ANY complaints from the public! Really? “Zero feedback from the public”? I find this very, very, very, very hard to believe. All I heard, over and over again throughout TIFF 2008, were folks griping about tickets and pricing and the lack of availability....

Spear-headed by Roy Disney, the film centers on 15 twentysomethings, who are recruited to train for an elite, 2500-mile open-ocean sailing race (California to Hawaii) called the TransPac. With six months to master their sport, get themselves in shape (mentally and physically) and, eventually, whittle their official racing team...

Dear TIFF, I think we need to talk. Things between us haven’t been that great lately. In fact, I’ve noticed that our relationship has been faltering for a while. At this point, it’s kind of reached critical mass. And maybe it’s time for you to see other people. I...

… with Vickie walking out of the TIFF box office, dejected and ticket-less. Today was the final day of this year’s festival, and I decided to make a last-ditch effort to use up a voucher by trying to snag a ticket to Patrik, Age 1.5 (screening at 9pm). Unfortunately,...

I’m getting really tired. I’m finding myself “just closing my eyes for a second” at screening after screening, and my energy level is dwindling by the minute. One more day of film festing to go, and tomorrow promises to be very busy, so tonight’s entry will be slightly abbreviated....

Anyone who attends TIFF knows the importance of chatting with your fellow filmgoers in line or in your seats before the movie. It’s how you hear about what’s great, what blows and whether Jessica Biel is in the ladies’ room doing bicep curls. But sometimes this tradition wields unfavorable...

Much to my relief and delight, I had the morning off today. No movies before noon, so I was actually able to catch up on a little sleep (emphasis on the word “little”), get some blogging done and have a breakfast that didn’t come in a paper bag or...

Is it just me, or are other folks experiencing relatively empty screenings already? (Despite, of course, the fact that the box office will tell you that every film you’d like is sold out?) That was the case for me at all three movies I attended today, none of which...

Okay, I thought maybe I was alone, but it seems like EVERYONE has noticed the serious lack of line management at the AMC theater… specifically, the ease with which line-cutters are joining in-going ticketholders and jumping the queues time and time again somewhere between the street-level doors and the...
