February 25, 2019–Well, everyone can breathe a sigh of relief that the Oscars survived intact this year. With no host, and trying to scramble up from last year’s all-time low ratings, the Academy Awards hoped to pull viewers back in by nominating not just one, but several blockbuster films (Black Panther, A Star Is Born, and Bohemian Rhapsody) to appeal to a larger audience. This tactic seemed to have worked a little, with viewership apparently up 12% from 2018’s lows. But it sure doesn’t hurt to have a brisker, under-four-hour event, plus getting Queen to open the show with “Bohemian Rhapsody” (rather than featuring a comedian’s awkward, scripted monologue that, more often than not, falls flat). The lack of montages and cute little host moments certainly made the show move along faster, though it had odd side effect of less water-cooler cringe-worthy moments to talk about the next day.
But we watch the Oscars for the unexpectedly great moments. Like how Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper nailed their performance of “Shallow” from A Star Is Born (with such chemistry that the internet has been on fire with speculation that they are in love like their characters), to the fabulous, funny, and unaffected thank you speech by Olivia Colman, who was a surprised as anyone to beat out favorite Glenn Close for Best Actress. Though the final award for Best Picture for Green Book may have gone down with a thud that could be heard across the Twitter-verse, it was still an enjoyable evening. Why? Because we love it! We just do.
