If you had to do a double-take at this first image from the anticipated Michael Jackson biopic Michael, you are not the only one. In a move that is both brilliant and almost uncomfortably too close to the source, Michael Jackson will be played by his own nephew, Jaafar Jackson (son of Jermaine Jackson). The Antoine Fuqua-directed film promises to be a “riveting and honest portrayal of the brilliant yet complicated man who became the King of Pop,” supposedly not avoiding some of the controversies and accusations that played the singer, especially in the last years of his life. Oscar-nominee Colman Domingo will play patriarch Joe Jackson, with Nia Long playing mom Katherine. But all eyes will be on Jaafar as Michael. I’m optimistic with the immeasurable talent in that family, that he’ll do just fine.

Jackson is currently set to release in 2025.
