Director Tommy Avallone takes a deep and affectionate dive into the history of the titular social network — how it started, how it evolved and why so many people love it so much — in Myspace. We posed our Qs à la mode to Tommy, and here’s what he shared!
If I had to describe my film using only three adjectives, they would be: Nostalgic, scrappy, EMO.
I wanted to make this film because: This was a very personal movie to me because I was a Myspace user. Rich Cronin from LFO had me in his top 8. I met my wife on Myspace. So much of what I do now to connect with people I learned from Myspace. It was great jumping back into that time period, and getting to talk to Mickey Avalon and Chris Carrabba.
The thing that surprised me most while making my film was: How making a documentary about Myspace was such a unique experience. Myspace was so many different things to so many different people. There wasn’t just one story, but millions of different stories all happening at the same time.
My favorite moment/scene/sequence in my film is: I made a dad joke to Lil Jon, it made him laugh and it made it in the cut. I was pretty happy with that.
My most invaluable piece of doc-making equipment was/is: My open mind.
My must-have snack to get me through hours in the editing room is: Whenever I can find Fuddruckers I will eat there, but you’re asking about the editing room, which doesn’t really exist. Everyone is ZOOMING in. So, I like to make myself a sandwich. I’m from New Jersey, so we have good rolls. And coffee… lots of coffee.
One piece of documentary-filmmaking advice I’d like to share with aspiring documentarians is: It’s not the caterpillar that’s interesting it’s the person who is obsessed with the caterpillar that’s interesting.
