Continuing their 90th Annivesary celebration, Warner Bros. has uncorked another doozy of a DVD collection, pulling together 20 films from their archives within a genre. We’ve checked out their Best Pictures and Musicals collections. This time around, it’s The Best of Warner Bros. 20 Film Collection: Comedy.
It is a bit of a reach to come up with themes so that the twenty selected films fit in bricks of 10 movies in two “chapters” (aka 2 DVD cases): Class Acts (1935-1980); and Class Clowns (1983-2009). This designation means that Caddyshack and Blazing Saddles butt up against The Philidelphia Story and two other Cary Grant screwball comedies, among other golden oldies. Ah, well. As with all these types of “greatest hits” collections, you get a mismash of films, where the only thing they really have in common is that they come from the same film studio.
The classics from the 30s and 40s are bonafide Class Acts, sure, but this collection really shines with its selection of comedies from the 70s through present. There are a few modern weaks links (Spies Like Us? Really?), but there are many bonafide modern classics in this list–and WB is lucky to have them! From Risky Business to Beetlejuice to National Lampoon’s Vacation, I dare any movie lover to not find a film in this collection that they’ve watched multiple times (admit it, you can recite whole lines of dialogue from some of these movies, too).
