I'm one of Moviepie's staff writers, and I've been reviewing films and film festivals — including TIFF, the (now-defunct) Worldwide Short Film Festival, and Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival — here for more than 20 years. I'm based in Toronto, and although I'll sit through just about any genre (except horror), my absolute fave films are documentaries: I see 50+ at Hot Docs every year! That said, I've also seen You've Got Mail more than 100 times (a conservative estimate!) and quote from it almost daily.

Okay, I want to start by thanking Eric for a nice, beefy entry yesterday, because I am so seriously wiped that I don’t want to blog at all and would love nothing more than to shut down my laptop this very second and go to bed. So, at least...

I like to believe that the universe tries its best to maintain balance at all times, so that whenever something crappy happens somewhere, something amazing might happen somewhere else. That’s kind of what today’s TIFFing was like. If you recall, yesterday sucked hard in my TIFF world, so it...

Let me preface this entry by saying: I am a crotchety TIFF veteran. I will fully cop to whining and complaining about how things have changed for the worse, and how the tickets are too expensive and hard to get now, and how the general vibe of the entire...

Today is the first official day of TIFF 2008, when screenings (though still limited at this point) get underway and the world waits in breathless anticipation for a sighting of international superstar Paul Gross (raise your hand if you just said, “Sorry, who?”), whose labour-of-love film, Passchendaele, opens the...
Okay, I know I said I wouldn’t continue to beat the dead horse that is the annual TIFF ticket lottery, but I only managed to snag 18 of the 29 films I selected this year, so I’m feeling a renewed sense of indignation over the whole thing. Last year,...

Oh. Hey. Guess what? It’s *yawn* film festival time again and… blah blah blah… film festival DOs and DON’Ts blah blah. What’s that, you say? You’re wondering if there’s a distinct lack of enthusiasm in this annual diary intro where, typically, I am overflowing with excitement and glee and...

Back in 2004, director Guillermo del Toro helmed the first Hellboy movie to a moderate level of acclaim and fanboy delight. But back then, he was just the sorta-known guy who made that movie where Mira Sorvino runs from giant bugs in sewers. Cut to 2008, and del Toro...

Con men, expert thieves, scientific geniuses, whatever. If they’re able to somehow outsmart a system, I’m in. So the prospect of watching a movie about a bunch of college kids counting cards at blackjack and taking Vegas for millions seemed right up my alley. Even better, it was based...

You know, I thought 2006 was a supremely meh year for movies, but 2007 managed to top its predecessor. Finding truly memorable films or moments was tough. Nonetheless, let’s reflect… 10 Films I Really Enjoyed in 2007 Death at a Funeral—a brilliant British farce that’s wonderfully over-the-top from start...

I don’t know anyone who was more excited to see this movie than I was. I love animated films. Anything by Pixar or the folks at Fox animation – gold. Pure cinematic gold. The only thing causing me some pre-screening anxiety was the fact that Bee Movie is a...

The story, set in the USA in the 1960s, centers on a trio of friends: Liverpudlian immigrant Jude (Jim Sturgess), girlfriend Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood), and Lucy’s rebellious older brother, Max (Joe Anderson). With a soundtrack featuring many of the Fab Four’s greatest hits, the film tracks our heroes...

More than a little over-the-top and art-directed to within an inch of its life, this sequel to 1998’s Elizabeth is set in 1585 and tracks, among other things, the relationship between Elizabeth I (Cate Blanchett, reprising her Oscar-nominated role) and Sir Walter Raleigh (Clive Owen), and the myriad threats...
