Director Cam Christiansen’s Echo of Everything travels the globe to explore the profound power of music. We posed our Qs à la mode to Cam ahead of its world premiere at the festival, and here’s what he shared!
If I had to describe my film using only three adjectives, they would be: Deep-dive, unexpected, existential.
I decided to make this film because: I love music and it has had a profound effect on my life and mental health.
The thing that surprised me most about my film’s subject/topic was: How the physical reality of music — such as harmonics, energy, frequency and vibrations — are so essential to the smallest particles of the atomic world, and all the way to the universe.
My favorite moment/scene/sequence in my film is: A fake punk-rock band scene we filmed, where I make a cameo doing a stage dive into a crowd and then get covered in beer.
The most challenging part of making my film was: Working through Covid and having to adjust all plans to the lockdown scenarios.
My most invaluable piece of doc-making gear was/is: My guitar.
One piece of documentary-filmmaking advice I’d like to share with aspiring documentarians is: Don’t wait for anyone to give you an opportunity to make something. Just do it with great passion and share your excitement, and it will magically work out.
