Reviews by Vickie

I'm one of Moviepie's staff writers, and I've been reviewing films and film festivals — including TIFF, the (now-defunct) Worldwide Short Film Festival, and Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival — here for more than 20 years. I'm based in Toronto, and although I'll sit through just about any genre (except horror), my absolute fave films are documentaries: I see 50+ at Hot Docs every year! That said, I've also seen You've Got Mail more than 100 times (a conservative estimate!) and quote from it almost daily.

The Muppets

The Muppets

It’s as good as it looks and, more importantly, even better than you hope it’ll be. Like the kooky, colorful characters at its core, it’s simultaneously sweet, funny, silly, sentimental and totally huggable. Combining nostalgia, goofy humor and clever meta-esque asides, the film finds Muppet-superfan brothers Gary (Jason Segel)...

Elysium

Elysium (2013)

Set roughly 140 years in the future, the film finds the Earth ravaged by pollution and overpopulation, resulting in the über-rich fleeing to the idyllic titular space station where the air is clean, the grass is green, technology has rendered disease nonexistent and the swarthy, unwashed masses – including...

The Wolverine (2013)

The Wolverine (2013)

Unlike the Origins offering, this movie sets its action in present day and after the events of X-Men: The Last Stand, with a bereaved Logan/Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) living as a recluse in a mountain cave and tormented by the death of Jean Grey (Famke Janssen), who alternates between love...

R.I.P.D.

R.I.P.D.

Hollow, unfunny and astoundingly dull, this big-screen adaptation of the Dark Horse comic finds two mismatched officers of the afterlife’s “Rest in Peace Department” – crotchety gunslinger Roy (Jeff Bridges) and newly deceased Nick (Ryan Reynolds) – trying to track down chunks of an ancient gold monolith while they...

Turbo

Turbo

Turbo (née Theo and voiced by Ryan Reynolds) is a snail with a dream: he wants to be fast. So fast that he might stand shoulder to shell with his idol, formidable French-Canadian Formula 1 racer Guy Gagné (voiced by Bill Hader). But Turbo’s garden-variety life and naysaying older...

The Way Way Back

The Way Way Back

Liam James stars (in the Chris Makepeace role) as Duncan, an introverted 14-year-old, who’s dragged along when his well-meaning mom (Toni Collette) and her asshat boyfriend Trent (Steve Carell, in a nicely smarmy turn) decide to spend the summer at Trent’s beach house. Desperate to get away from the...

The Internship

The story centers on teenager M.K. (voiced by Amanda Seyfried), who – after the death of her mother – goes to live with her estranged, eccentric-scientist father (voiced by Jason Sudeikis) in a ramshackle house in the middle of the woods. He’s obsessed with proving the existence of an...

Hot Docs 2013: Wrap Up

Wait. WHAT? Hot Docs has already announced its prize winners for this year’s fest. With two days of screenings left! Again, I ask, how can the audience award be decided already when there are still dozens of audiences left who haven’t voted?! And I’m just as surprised at some...

Hot Docs 2013 #14: Legal Eagles

Today was my final day at Hot Docs 2013, and I’m pleased to report that it ended on a high note. It’s always nice when your final screening is a good one, and equally nice when you’re seeing it while hanging out with fun film-loving people. So, special thanks...
