Reviews by Vickie

I'm one of Moviepie's staff writers, and I've been reviewing films and film festivals — including TIFF, the (now-defunct) Worldwide Short Film Festival, and Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival — here for more than 20 years. I'm based in Toronto, and although I'll sit through just about any genre (except horror), my absolute fave films are documentaries: I see 50+ at Hot Docs every year! That said, I've also seen You've Got Mail more than 100 times (a conservative estimate!) and quote from it almost daily.

Hot Docs 2014 #5: Family and Food

Here’s (one of the many reasons) why I love Hot Docs: even on a Tuesday afternoon in April, when it’s windy and cold and POURING and generally miserable, weather-wise, screenings are packed-to-the-rafters full. Every film I attended yesterday was sold out – even the ones that required lining up...

Hot Docs 2014 #4: Callings

Today, I did something that I’ve never before done in my 20+ years of festival-going: I forgot my press pass at home. I make a point of never taking it out of my bag during a festival, so that I’m always assured it’ll be with me when I need...

Hot Docs 2014 #3: Matters of the Mind

Today was a day of rampant indecision. I couldn’t decide what to see. Screening times conflicted, and there wasn’t enough time between certain films to grab something to eat… or arrive at the next venue without having had to perform wind sprints along University Avenue. I think I must...

Hot Docs 2014 #2: Heroes and Legends

Ah, I love a day filled with awesome documentaries! And, happily, today was just such a day. After some commuting hiccups (I’ve moved to a new place since last year’s fest, so I haven’t quite nailed the bus-and-subway timing yet), I sat down to the first screening of the...

Hot Docs 2014 #1: Young Men in Trouble

Hooray! Time to finally start seeing some documentaries! My work schedule this spring has been such that attending any pre-festival screenings was impossible (which pained me greatly, because I missed more than a dozen opportunities to check out films in advance), so when I headed out today for my...

Hot Docs 2014: Let the Festival Begin!

It seems like just yesterday I was writing about Gideon’s Army and my 2013 Hot Docs experience drawing to a close, yet here it is: time for the 2014 festival to get underway! And I’m not exaggerating when I say I look forward to Hot Docs all year long –...

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)

Ben Stiller (who also directs) stars as the titular character, a one-time mohawked teenaged skateboarder, who deflated into a bland, working-stiff adult life after the death of his father. Now a negative-asset manager (i.e., he catalogues all the photo negatives) for LIFE magazine, Walter is a nebbish, bespectacled Everyman,...

Black Nativity (2013)

Jacob Latimore stars as Langston, a grumpy Baltimore teen whose cash-strapped single mom (Jennifer Hudson) sends him to New York City to spend Christmas with his estranged grandparents – the Reverend Cornell Cobbs (Forest Whitaker) and his wife, Aretha (Angela Bassett). A fish out of water, Langston is amazed...

African Cats (2011)

African Cats (2011)

Narrated by Samuel L. Jackson and shot over more than two years at the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya, the film trains its lens on a number of feline inhabitants and their adorable-with-a-capital-A offspring. There’s Sita the cheetah and her five tiny cubs, who live a fairly isolated...

27 Dresses taps current Hollywood It Girl Katherine Heigl to star as Jane, a perpetual bridesmaid, who lurrrrrrrrrrrrrves weddings and has been in a whopping 27 ceremonies. But Jane’s so busy helping everyone else with their special days that she completely forgets to get a personal life of her...

Baby Mama

Baby Mama

Let me begin by saying that I was wavering between giving this film four or five slices. It’s really a solid 4.5, but I decided to round up because I love Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, this somewhat-disappointing chick flick (don’t believe the hype – this totally is a...

Enough Said (2013)

Enough Said (2013)

Quiet, understated, mature, funny and poignant, Holofcener’s latest offering is the kind of slice-of-life movie that makes you feel like you’re spending time with a bunch of folks you know. And like. A lot. Julia Louis-Dreyfus stars as Eva, a masseuse whose teenaged daughter, Ellen (Tracey Fairaway), is getting...
