I'm one of Moviepie's staff writers, and I've been reviewing films and film festivals — including TIFF, the (now-defunct) Worldwide Short Film Festival, and Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival — here for more than 20 years. I'm based in Toronto, and although I'll sit through just about any genre (except horror), my absolute fave films are documentaries: I see 50+ at Hot Docs every year! That said, I've also seen You've Got Mail more than 100 times (a conservative estimate!) and quote from it almost daily.

In the film, which is “inspired by true events,” Tatum is Leo, an extremely charming and likeable fellow, who falls head over heels in love with Paige (Rachel McAdams), a sort of Boho art student who’s just secured a big commissioned gig at Chicago’s Tribune Tower. In flashbacks, the...

As a Les Miz virgin – I’d never read the novel nor seen a theatrical production – I went in blind. I knew the basics of the story, and was ready to have my mind blown by what the film’s trailer had indicated would be a mind-blowing movie, grand...

The winner of the audience award at the Toronto International Film Festival and ultimately the Oscar for Best Picture, director Danny Boyle’s latest offering combines his trademark frenetic style (see: Trainspotting) with a distinctly Hollywood-esque “little engine that could” type story, and the result is a colorful, enjoyable, occasionally...

Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd reprise their Knocked Up roles as Debbie and Pete, a ridiculously-charming-because-of-their-flaws pair of married suburbanites each on the brink of turning the big 4-0 and trying to cling, however precariously, to their youthful ambitions and their hot-and-cold relationship. Their daughters, Sadie and Charlotte (Mann...

Narrated by James Earl Jones (taking over for Patrick Stewart) and blessed with breathtaking cinematography, the film aims to teach audiences – in as subtle as a way as possible – about the issue of climate change, framing it within the stories and plights of some of the world’s...

Director Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian) knows this, and gleefully hands the wheel of this silly but often hilarious mistaken-identity caper over to the two gifted comedic actors, whose ease with each other and the (obvious) improvisational flourishes they add to the material make...

The story, which is all “shot” on home video by assorted characters throughout the narrative, follows three teens – abused-at-home Andrew (Leonardo DiCaprio look-alike Dane DeHaan), his cousin Matt (Alex Russell) and Matt’s all-American best pal, Steve (Michael B. Jordan) – who clamber down into a dark hole one...

Told in flashbacks, the film follows the journey, both literal and figurative, of its titular character (Suraj Sharma), whose life in India is upended when his father (Adil Hussain) announces he’s moving the family – and a menagerie of zoo animals – across the ocean to Canada. But, no...

Things aren’t looking too great for anyone when the film opens: super-spy James Bond (Daniel Craig) is presumed dead after a botched mission that simultaneously lands M (Judi Dench) in seriously hot water with the powers-that-be – including Ralph Fiennes – who calmly but pointedly suggest it might be...

Set in the world of video games old and new, Disney’s latest offering blends nostalgia and high-energy antics to create the story of its titular oaf (voiced by John C. Reilly), a character in a classic arcade game (that bears an uncanny resemblance to Donkey Kong), who’s spent decades...

I’m going to preface this review by saying that I think the current upswing in gay and lesbian films is a good thing. More people out there telling stories? Super. More gay and lesbian filmmakers taking chances? Great. Keep striving to produce thought-provoking or fun or dramatic or artsy...

In the film, Sandler voices Dracula, who’s hung up his bloodsucking cape to operate an exclusive, no-humans-allowed resort for the world’s weary monsters. He’s also an overprotective father to his teenaged (in vampire years, anyway) daughter, Mavis (voiced by Selena Gomez), who desperately wants to go out and see...
