I'm one of Moviepie's staff writers, and I've been reviewing films and film festivals — including TIFF, the (now-defunct) Worldwide Short Film Festival, and Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival — here for more than 20 years. I'm based in Toronto, and although I'll sit through just about any genre (except horror), my absolute fave films are documentaries: I see 50+ at Hot Docs every year! That said, I've also seen You've Got Mail more than 100 times (a conservative estimate!) and quote from it almost daily.

As for the movie itself… The plot is a fairly thin one, but one that provides a nice thread onto which the filmmakers pile heaps and heaps and HEAPS of action. The movie is essentially one, super-extended, multi-location chase sequence. The last time we saw covert agent and sometime...

Admittedly, I wasn’t expecting much from this adaptation of the Jules Verne classic, especially since it stars Jackie Chan – whose last two big-screen forays (The Medallion and Shanghai Knights) left me less than a’glow with adoration. But, lo and behold, the movie’s actually pretty good! Chan stars as...

It’s not campy or colorful, but gorgeously dark and gothic and shadowy, like a black-and-white technicolor movie. Ron Perlman, who last donned mucho prosthetic make-up as Vincent in the cult-hit TV series Beauty and the Beast, dons mucho prosthetic make-up to play the titular demon, who’s rescued – as...

Charlie Kaufman has earned the somewhat unique honor of being a screenwriter who is a household name, with the creation of such cinematic head trips as Being John Malkovich and Adaptation. He specializes in literalizing the psychological, and with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, this tendency shifts into...

When the press kit for … Drama Queen arrived in my mailbox, it contained a letter to the press from the film’s newbie director, Sara Sugarman, detailing what a joy it was to create the movie. She wrote about the thrill of the filmmaking process, the quality of the...

Reuben Feffer (Ben Stiller) is a guy who likes things that are safe and well-planned out. He works at a big insurance company, assessing the risks involved in insuring potential clients. Reuben walks the straight and narrow, uses logic and reason as his totems and leads a fairly tidy,...

Q: What’s the fastest way to suck all the humor and dignity out of two funny and talented actors? A: Make them the half-witted parents of TWELVE obnoxious children. Watching Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt in Cheaper By The Dozen begs just one question: what were you two thinking?...

Elf is cute. It’s a sweet little movie with some clever jokes, good performances and a nice message. I liked it. But, as my sister so wisely pointed out as we were leaving the theater, Elf could have been great. Will Ferrell stars as Buddy the Elf, a human...

I don’t know what it is about Seann William Scott, but I find him endlessly entertaining. Movies, talk shows, doesn’t matter. He just makes me laugh. A lot. And I mean that in a the very best way possible. I *heart* Seann! As such, his character of Steve Stifler...

Hot women in skimpy clothes? Profanity? More explosions? More gun fights? Lots and lots and lots of initially cool but quickly tiresome and unnecessary slo-mo shots? Then, my friend, you will LOOOOOOVE Bad Boys II, which contains all those things and more, and really should have been called Bad...

I find Sean Connery distracting. I’m not a big fan of his, especially of his work in recent years (Encrapment, anyone?), and he was a big reason why I wasn’t looking forward to seeing The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Like, at all. I mean, I get it. He was a...

I’ll admit that I walked into the press screening—an experience that was complete with a bag search and metal detectors!—a little skeptical. I’d seen the original X-Men movie and was impressed but not blown away, so I wondered if this sequel would live up to the first film, surpass...
