Set in Los Angeles in 1977, The Nice Guys finds private eye Holland March and hired heavy Jackson Healy crossing paths in search of a missing girl, Amelia (Margaret Qualley). They soon realize their shared purpose, and team up in spite of their rather distinct and sometimes conflicting personalities. As they delve deeper and deeper into the mystery of Amelia’s whereabouts and the deaths of those around her, Holland and Jackson develop an entertaining (if slightly dysfunctional) rapport. Their investigative efforts are complemented by the creative sleuthing of Holland’s precocious tweenage daughter, Holly (Angourie Rice).
The trail of clues leads them on a series of misadventures, including a raucous porn industry party and a meeting with an influential government official (Kim Basinger). It turns out that Amelia has good reason to be on the run, and her crazy conspiracy theory might just work out to be true. It’s a journey filled with unexpected twists, but at its heart is a burgeoning friendship between Holland and Jackson, lots of witty banter, and a sweet father/daughter relationship wherein the child frequently acts as the parent.
