Few things make a book feel fancier than a hard slipcase, so it’s always a treat diving into Ian Nathan’s elegant and thorough tomes on film. Like Terminator Vault and Tim Burton: The Iconic Filmmaker and His Work, The Coen Brothers: The Iconic Filmmakers and Their Work is an in-depth look at the lives and careers of two prolific and influential siblings. Filled with movie stills, behind-the-scenes photos, and a detailed fold-out mapping the Coen’s entire career (including projects they wrote, directed, and/or produced), Nathan’s book is as fun to look at as it is informative.
Beginning with the brothers’ formative years in Minnesota and chronicling their career to present day, The Coen Brothers explores everything from early work on The Evil Dead to the iconic Fargo and The Big Lebowski. (The last film to be examined in-depth is 2014’s Hail Caesar!, but the book does mention projects released in the years intervening, including 2017’s Suburbicon). Using a combination of film analysis, trivia, and quotes from the Coens, the book paints a careful picture of how each of their films was made. It’s a true education for casual fans and a delightful retrospective for diehards.
