March 13, 2023–Wow, so was that an Everything Everywhere All At Once party, or what? Sweeping up seven Oscars, including some VERY big ones, like Best Picture, Best Director(s), Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, and Original Screenplay, A24’s wacky and weird flick about a weary laundromat owner (Michelle Yeoh) tumbling into the multi-verse was easily the sensation of the evening. Even naysayers have to admit that the EEAAO team were fun winners to watch, especially when statues were handed out right away to Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis for their supporting roles. There seriously wasn’t a dry eye at my Oscar party during their speeches… what a way to start the show!
Seriously, the show seemed… NICE compared to The Slap of last year, both in tone and non-stop appreciative smiles (and many tears). Brendan Fraser and Michelle Yeoh scooping up their lead acting awards didn’t come as a huge surprise (despite the horse-race of their categories all season), yet their thank yous came across as truly heartfelt. And who didn’t love RRR’s “Naatu Naatu” songwriter M.M. Keeravaani singing his thank you speech to the Carpenters’ “Top of the World”? Adorbs!
It was a surprisingly pleasant and not-too-long ceremony (only half an hour over!). There were, of course, a few cringey moments like host Jimmy Kimmel doing a bit in the audience where he asked Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala about Harry Styles’ spitting on Chris Pine (she looked baffled); or Disney/ABC debuting a trailer for the live action version of The Little Mermaid during the telecast rather than paying for commercial time, where it belonged. But overall, yay! How strangely refreshing to have a pleasant and happy Oscar ceremony for a change!
