I'm one of Moviepie's staff writers, and I've been reviewing films and film festivals — including TIFF, the (now-defunct) Worldwide Short Film Festival, and Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival — here for more than 20 years. I'm based in Toronto, and although I'll sit through just about any genre (except horror), my absolute fave films are documentaries: I see 50+ at Hot Docs every year! That said, I've also seen You've Got Mail more than 100 times (a conservative estimate!) and quote from it almost daily.

There’s a scene in this lush but strangely hollow biopic of the titular monarch that finds its heroine (Saoirse Ronan) meeting her estranged cousin, Queen Elizabeth I (Margot Robbie), for the very first time in a remote cabin filled with what looks to be dozens and dozens of wet...

Set in 1962, the film tracks the literal and figurative real-life journey of two unlikely traveling companions: hulking NYC club bouncer Tony “Lip” Vallelonga (Viggo Mortensen) and Don “Doc” Shirley (Mahershala Ali), the virtuoso pianist who hires Tony to be his muscle on a potentially dangerous eight-week concert tour...

Set in the early 1700s and based (however loosely) on actual events, the film revolves around England’s batty Queen Anne (Olivia Colman), and her devoted – if devious – companion, counsel and confidante Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz), who’s clever enough to realize that the increasingly eccentric and erratic queen...

In this outing, Claire Foy slips (unconvincingly) into goth über-hacker Lisbeth’s tats and piercings, lacking any of the edge with which Noomi Rapace infused the character in the original Girl films. Where Rapace’s Lisbeth – and even, to some extent, Rooney Mara’s later, if less-successful, interpretation of the character...

Two things before we get started: 1. I haven’t seen the acclaimed documentary Marwencol, which inspired this film, and purposely didn’t see watch it in the weeks leading up to the screening because I wanted to see Welcome to Marwen with virgin eyes so that I wouldn’t make comparisons...

Rami Malek, sporting one helluva set of prosthetic dentures and an array of questionable wigs, stars as Mercury, who went from Heathrow baggage handler to rock god over the course of about two decades. Directed (mostly) by Bryan Singer, who was fired from the production late in the game...

Johnson stars as Will Sawyer, a former FBI agent and military vet left an amputee after a harrowing hostage-rescue mission goes awry. Now resigned to a comparatively more hum-drum life as a security expert and family man, Sawyer is tapped by his former partner (Pablo Schreiber) to assess the...

Though the festival still runs for one more day, I have to get back to real life and to work, which means missing Sunday screenings for the sake of laundry, cleaning, grocery shopping and all the other things I’ve neglected while hopping from film to film over the past...

The weather forecast for Friday was not promising: rain and extreme winds. Not the kind of weather you want to find yourself in when you’re standing in line outside, which was the case for my first two films of the day. Thankfully, the first batch of rain passed through...

Charlize Theron stars as Marlo, the aforementioned beleaguered, desperately-seeking-sleep mom, who’s just given birth to child #3 and is about ready to snap due to the mounting pressures of child-rearing – especially when it comes to her young son (Asher Miles Fallica) with behavioral issues – and her increasingly...

The weather forecast for Thursday was grim: rain. I was seriously considering skipping my first film of the day because it was at Hart House, meaning an outdoor lineup. Thankfully, I decided to take my chances and Mother Nature very graciously held off until after we were let into...

It’s usually around this time during the festival – i.e., just after the halfway point – that I start to hit the wall. Days of lineups and donuts for dinner and hotfooting it from theater to theater and writing reviews in the wee/late hours start to catch up with...
