I'm one of Moviepie's staff writers, and I've been reviewing films and film festivals — including TIFF, the (now-defunct) Worldwide Short Film Festival, and Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival — here for more than 20 years. I'm based in Toronto, and although I'll sit through just about any genre (except horror), my absolute fave films are documentaries: I see 50+ at Hot Docs every year! That said, I've also seen You've Got Mail more than 100 times (a conservative estimate!) and quote from it almost daily.

Set in the year 2029 – when, apparently, nothing (not technology, not clothes, not cars, etc.) really looks any different than it does in 2017 – the film centers on an aging, no-longer-as-sharp-as-he-used-to-be-Logan (Hugh Jackman), who’s traded saving the world for being a glorified Uber driver, drunkenly shuttling newlyweds,...

My expectations really weren’t that high, and I guess you could say they were met, but as the inaugural film in what Universal hopes will become a massive “classic monster” franchise – which will include such perennial faves as the invisble man (Johnny Depp’s been cast), Frankenstein (Javier Bardem)...

Intended, I guess, to be some kind of R-rated girl-bonding movie that will remind audiences once again that women can behave just as crudely and badly as the fellas, it’s pretty awful all around. (After sitting in stone silence through all of the credits, and as we were exiting...

With a distinct “Moses leading the Israelites” vibe seeming to guide the proceedings, the film finds our simian hero, Caesar (Andy Serkis), preparing his ever-dwindling clan of apes for an epic journey to a new home after their current hideaway is discovered – and swiftly destroyed – by militant...

Honestly, I was grinning from start to finish. It’s light-hearted, action-packed, funny, smart and – unlike so many recent films of its ilk – wonderfully human. The characters’ problems are comparatively small scale, and its Big Bad isn’t a god or an alien or some kind of mutant creature:...

For Billie (Emma Stone), the #1 ranked female tennis player at the time, the struggle is with her sexuality. Married to her strapping husband Larry (Austin Stowell), Billie nonetheless finds herself falling for pretty hairdresser Marilyn (Andrea Riseborough), who quickly goes from trimming Billie’s bangs to tagging along on...

For the forgetful: when last we saw Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) and his rag-tag band of resistance fighters, they were betrayed by Teresa (Kaya Scodelario) and being ambushed at the Right Arm’s base camp by evil corporation WCKD – led by trigger-happy Janson (Aiden Gillen) and sinisterly maternal Ava (Patricia...

In the film, Day-Lewis is Reynolds Woodcock, a skilled and sought-after designer of women’s gowns, who’s as rigid and regimented as he is revered. Reynolds is not a particularly likeable fellow: he’s gruff and dismissive and self-important, not to mention being the better side of 50, yet women –...

As the movie opens, it’s 1996 and the nefarious, centuries-old board game has turned itself (yes, turned itself!) into an Atari-like video game so as to keep up with the times and lure a new generation of unsuspecting kids into playing. Much like the original, an unsuspecting player starts...

Hugh Jackman stars as legendary ringmaster and purveyor of hoaxes Phineas “P.T.” Barnum, whose dirt-poor upbringing gives way to an entrepreneurial spirit. Driven by an innate showmanship, cash-strapped Barnum whisks his long-time beloved – the aristocratic Charity (Michelle Williams, in a completely thankless role) – away from her rich,...

Sally Hawkins stars as Elisa, a doe-eyed mute woman who works as an overnight cleaner – alongside co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) – in a research facility in 1962 Baltimore. One otherwise inauspicious evening, a new “asset” is brought in for observation: an amphibian man (Doug Jones) captured in South...

In addition to helming the film, Branagh stars as renowned detective Hercule Poirot, whose investigative skills are rivaled only by his OCD. Remaining very faithful to the source material, the 1930s-set story finds a weary Poirot – who’s eager for some time off – reluctantly hopping on the titular...
