I'm one of Moviepie's staff writers, and I've been reviewing films and film festivals — including TIFF, the (now-defunct) Worldwide Short Film Festival, and Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival — here for more than 20 years. I'm based in Toronto, and although I'll sit through just about any genre (except horror), my absolute fave films are documentaries: I see 50+ at Hot Docs every year! That said, I've also seen You've Got Mail more than 100 times (a conservative estimate!) and quote from it almost daily.

Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn co-star as, respectively, Emily and Linda Middleton. Dumped by her boyfriend right before a non-refundable trip to Ecuador, Emily is desperate to find a plus-one so she doesn’t have to travel alone. Her cat-loving, overprotective mom suddenly becomes Emily’s go-to choice after Emily discovers...

In a performance that will inevitably draw comparisons to his role as Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, David Oyelowo stars as Khama, the heir to the throne of the British-ruled African country of what was then Bechuanaland. While studying abroad in post-Second World War London, he meets and...

Based on the graphic novel of the same name by Daniel Clowes, the film centers on an eccentric, curmudgeonly and filter-less odd duck named Wilson (Woody Harrelson), who lives alone, says whatever he thinks, and whose only friend is his beloved dog. Spurred by the death of his father...

This time around, Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) finds himself on the outs with the Anti-Villain League (AVL) and its hard-nosed new boss (voiced by Jenny Slate), who fires him after he fails to thwart former-bad-boy-child-star-turned-disgruntled-grownup-villain Balthazar Bratt (voiced by Trey Parker). Bratt, perpetually stuck in the 1980s, clinging...

Set 20 years after the original, and reuniting all of the original players, the film centers on prodigal son Renton (Ewan McGregor), who returns to Edinburgh two decades after ditching his mates and running off with their money. Partially repentant, partially lonely, partially curious about what’s become of his...

It was the final day of Hot Docs, and even though I was pooped, I decided to take in three more screenings before the curtain closed on the 2017 festival. The sun was (finally!) out, but I opted to spend the day inside my fave venue: the Lightbox. First...

Sometimes, you have the best intentions when it comes to packing in as many documentaries as you can before the festival is over. But sometimes, your body has other plans. Such was the case with my upset stomach today, which meant I cut my three films down to two....

There are only two full days of Hot Docs left, and between the films I saw before the fest and the ones I’ve taken in during the past week, I think I’m at around 42 or 43 documentaries screened so far. PHEW! I’m starting to really feel it, too,...

One of the things I enjoy most about my Hot Docs media pass is the freedom it affords me to change my filmgoing schedule at any time. If I start hearing bad buzz about an upcoming film on my to-see list, I can change course and see something else....

Festival fatigue is beginning to set in. Darting from film to film, standing in long lines for long periods of time, eating poorly, sleeping too little and then getting up to do it all over again the next day – in the rain – is tiring. But we’re in...

Is anyone else getting tired of watching movies in damp clothes and shoes, surrounded by other people in damp clothes and shoes? Thankfully, it looks like Hot Docs audiences will get a one-day respite from rain, so make the most of it! It was a three-screening day, and I...

What a truly miserable day, weather-wise. Non-stop pouring rain, chilly temperatures and, from what I could tell, many festgoers opted to stay home (and dry) instead of venturing out. And, now that I’m back home (and dry), I can’t say I blame them. My first film of the day...
