Reviews by Vickie

I'm one of Moviepie's staff writers, and I've been reviewing films and film festivals — including TIFF, the (now-defunct) Worldwide Short Film Festival, and Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival — here for more than 20 years. I'm based in Toronto, and although I'll sit through just about any genre (except horror), my absolute fave films are documentaries: I see 50+ at Hot Docs every year! That said, I've also seen You've Got Mail more than 100 times (a conservative estimate!) and quote from it almost daily.

Why Him? (2016)

Why Him? (2016)

If you watched the trailer and thought, “OMG dude, that looks hiLARious and awesome!”, you’ll probably really, really enjoy the movie. If, like me, you watched the trailer and cringed, thinking Why Him? looks like yet another painful exercise in frat-boy humor and something Bryan Cranston may want to...

Friday Night Lights (2004)

Friday Night Lights (2004)

As it stands, I don’t mind football, but I don’t think I have the rabid, all-consuming obsession with the sport that might be required to get the most from this film. Directed by Peter Berg (Very Bad Things), Lights is the true story of the Permian Panthers, a West...

Inferno (2016)

Inferno (2016)

Exhausting and not especially engaging, Inferno is yet another installment in the series of big-screen adaptations of the novels by Dan Brown. This time around, Langdon teams with a young doctor named Sienna Brooks (Felicity Jones) to prevent a deadly virus from being released on humanity. The pathogen is...

Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising

Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising

If you recall, I actually quite enjoyed Neighbors! Sure, I was surprised that I liked it, but still. It was funny, and had an unexpected layer of heart! Unfortunately, the same cannot really be said for its successor, which finds about-to-move-to-a-new-house Mac (Seth Rogen) and Kelly (Rose Byrne) stuck...

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016)

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (2016)

As its title suggests, the key element in the whimsical fantasy-adventure is a secret orphanage – hidden within a time loop on a remote island in Wales – housing a number of children with extraordinary abilities (think: a kinder, gentler version of Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters) and presided...

Ice Age: Collision Course (2016)

Ice Age: Collision Course (2016)

This time around, in a sequel I’m not sure anyone really asked for, Manny (voiced by Ray Romano), Diego (voiced by Denis Leary) and Sid (voiced by John Leguizamo) are faced with a cataclysmic event: a giant meteor is on a collision course (get it?!) with Earth, knocked into...

Ghostbusters (2016)

Ghostbusters (2016)

Jones aside, director Paul Feig’s simultaneously praised and poo-poo-ed remake of the 1980s classic is a decent, if not overwhelmingly awesome, retelling of a story that’s grown so close to the hearts of many a moviegoer. Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy co-star as, respectively, Erin and Abby, scientists and...

The Peanuts Movie (2015)

The Peanuts Movie (2015)

Whyyyy? Why did this need to be made? And in 3d?? And, more importantly, would it turn into one of those über-hip, let’s-update-the-classic remakes – filled with modern-day lingo and content that aims to show off technology instead of solid storytelling? Please no, thought I. Thankfully, the film fully...

Jurassic World (2015)

Jurassic World (2015)

Proving that those who do not learn from history will continue to repeat it as long as moviegoers are willing to shell out money, Jurassic World delivers is an action-heavy, plot-deficient spectacle that features more foolish humans learning the hard way that manipulating nature and hatching dinosaurs is a...

Going Clear

Going Clear

Based on Lawrence Wright’s book of the almost-same name (Wright’s title throws “Hollywood” into the mix after the word “Scientology”), Gibney’s film examines how a sci-fi author in the 1950s managed to create a controversial “religion” that has amassed billions of dollars and a devout (if small) following that...

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl

Thomas Mann stars as Greg Gaines, a contemplative and awkward semi-loner, who’s decided the path of least resistance towards getting through high school unscathed is to be on casually good terms with everyone, but to never truly get close to anyone. His best friend since childhood is Earl (Ronald...

Minions

Minions

In small doses, as cute, globular supporting players in the Despicable Me films or shorts of their own, the Minions were entertaining. Watching their goofy, gibberishy antics for 90 minutes straight, though, becomes repetitive, tiresome and not nearly as fun as I’d hoped. In this set-in-1960s-England prequel, three Minions...
