I'm one of Moviepie's staff writers, and I've been reviewing films and film festivals — including TIFF, the (now-defunct) Worldwide Short Film Festival, and Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival — here for more than 20 years. I'm based in Toronto, and although I'll sit through just about any genre (except horror), my absolute fave films are documentaries: I see 50+ at Hot Docs every year! That said, I've also seen You've Got Mail more than 100 times (a conservative estimate!) and quote from it almost daily.

Told in flashbacks and directed by Jean-Marc Vallée (Dallas Buyers Club), Wild tells the true story of Strayed’s 1995 solo trek along 1,100 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail. An inexperienced hiker whose life is in a drug-fuelled spiral after the death of her beloved mother (Laura Dern) and...

Strangely enough, though, I didn’t find it nearly as painful or tragically mangled as either of its aforementioned predecessors on my screening schedule. Comparatively speaking, it wasn’t terrible. Oh, it’s fully lame and filled with the kind of humor that you can only produce when you’re writing by committee...

It’s just as clever, just as bro-tastic, just as wink-at-the-audience meta and just as funny as its predecessor… even though, as it outright acknowledges, it’s essentially just the same movie all over again, only with a bigger budget and more outrageousness. This time, a massive smuggling sting gone horribly...

Measured, thoughtful and, at times, quite moving, Stewart’s political drama tracks Bahari – an Iranian-Canadian – in the days before his arrest in June 2009, and his subsequent incarceration. In Iran to cover the controversial elections, Bahari gets involved with supporters of the opposition, sends footage of the street...

Co-directed by Jeff Sherman (Robert’s son) and Greg Sherman (Richard’s son), this fascinating and moving documentary chronicles the brothers’ lives from childhood to present day, highlighting their greatest achievements, examining the evolution of some of their best-known songs and tracking the gradual decay of their personal relationship. Robert, the...

Unfunny, mean-spirited and, for the most part, leaden in its execution, this 19-years-later sequel to Dumb & Dumber proves not everything improves with age, least of all the misadventures of two dimwits whose faces have grown much older but whose hair has inexplicably remained exactly the same. Seriously, it...

Things are a little tense in the realm of perpetually feuding Greek gods Zeus (Sean Bean), Poseidon (Kevin McKidd) and Hades (Steve Coogan). The bickering brothers have long been at odds, but when someone steals Zeus’ lightning bolt an all-out, world-ravishing war is on deck. Meanwhile, on Earth, average...

For anyone who hasn’t yet been caught up in the zeitgeist, TFiOS is based on John Green’s bestselling young-adult novel of the same name, and centers on the relationship between two teenagers as they slowly fall in love. The catch? Both spirited Hazel (Shailene Woodley) and charmer Gus (Ansel...

Andrew Garfield once again steps into Spidey’s suit (and Peter Parker’s shoes), this time dealing with a pair of nefarious foes – Jamie Foxx’s nerd-turned-villain Electro, and Dane DeHaan’s hugely petulant and highly annoying Harry Osborn/Green Goblin – while simultaneously trying to work out the intricacies of his romance...

And, you know, maybe I shouldn’t have dreaded it as much as I did. After all, it’s directed by Nicholas Stoller, who’s responsible for a trio of enjoyable comedies: Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek (which I loved) and The Five-Year Engagement (Emily Blunt – ‘nuff said)....

Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel co-star as Annie and Jay, a once-sex-crazed couple who have settled into the everyday (and comparatively chaste) routine of married life and parenthood. In a misguided bid to reignite the passion in their relationship, they decide to shoot themselves performing every page’s worth of...

It could also be about loneliness. Or the thankless life of someone working in small-town theater. Or ego. Or the lengths someone might go to in order to leave his mark on the world. Or all of those things. Or none of them. Want to see it yet? The...
