I'm one of Moviepie's staff writers, and I've been reviewing films and film festivals — including TIFF, the (now-defunct) Worldwide Short Film Festival, and Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival — here for more than 20 years. I'm based in Toronto, and although I'll sit through just about any genre (except horror), my absolute fave films are documentaries: I see 50+ at Hot Docs every year! That said, I've also seen You've Got Mail more than 100 times (a conservative estimate!) and quote from it almost daily.

Because even though both Cameron Diaz and Leslie Mann are women, and play characters with names (Carly and Kate, respectively), the ONLY thing they ever talk about in this duller-than-dishwater comedy is a man: Mark (Nicolaj Coster-Waldau), Carly’s boyfriend… who also happens to be Kate’s philandering husband. Directed by...

Vince Vaughn stars as Peter La Fleur, an aimless but contented slacker who runs Average Joe’s gymnasium – a sort of haven for the geeky, the unathletic and the societally scorned. Across the street is the mammoth Globo Gym – a flashy, expensive fortress of fitness designed for the...

For starters, I couldn’t quite tell whether Clooney’s latest directorial effort – an amiable but somewhat forgettable WWII picture about a rag-tag group of art-loving guys tasked with recovering, and protecting, some of Europe’s most prized art from the Nazis – was meant to be a lighthearted romp or...

Less a remake than a clever reboot, this big-screen incarnation of the iconic 1980s TV series of the same name simultaneously embraces formula and turns it on its ear. Here, somewhat-inept-but-desperate-to-arrest bicycle cops Jenko (Tatum) and Schmidt (Hill) find themselves reassigned after one too many screw-ups. Given their youthful...

More than that, though, Mr. Brooks looks to be the best worst movie that will be released in 2007—it is so spectacularly bad that it’s almost brilliant in its crappiness and I fully expect it to clean up at next year’s Razzie Awards. I was tempted to leave this...

The formula is so simple – great actors playing great characters in a great film with great effects and a really great screenplay – that’s it’s amazing so many films get it wrong at this time of year. But X-Men: Days of Future Past gets it so very very right....

Hot Docs 2014 is a wrap, and the numbers are all in: audiences totaled somewhere in the 192,000 range. There were more than 450 public screenings, 197 films, 176 visiting filmmakers and some 2,300+ industry delegates taking part in the festival’s special industry programming. What was once a quaint...

Here’s the funny thing about Hot Docs: sometimes, you stumble upon a gem completely by accident. This morning, I’d planned to go see A Dangerous Game at the Bader. I checked the bus schedule (again, being newly a little farther from the downtown core means I need to carefully...

When I woke up on the second-last day of Hot Docs, I felt like I was hitting the festival wall – sort of like what I imagine a marathon runner feels as he or she reaches the final mile and his or her body konks out. I was pooped,...

It seems that every year, I manage to pick a film that I regret almost from frame one and, this year, that honor goes to Focus on Infinity (N/A), which sounded fascinating in its official program-book description, but turned out to be epically S-L-O-W, meandering and, for me, incredibly...

At last, a day where I didn’t have to take out my umbrella! After a morning catching up on reviews and emails, I headed out to the Bader for my first of three screenings. And, even though I arrived an hour before showtime, there was already a big rush...

Some days at Hot Docs are better than others. They’re all pretty great, but some are weirdly extra-wonderful. That was today. Though the weather was once again grey, wet and dismal, I headed out early to get in line at the Bader. My first film of the day was...
