I'm one of Moviepie's staff writers, and I've been reviewing films and film festivals — including TIFF, the (now-defunct) Worldwide Short Film Festival, and Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival — here for more than 20 years. I'm based in Toronto, and although I'll sit through just about any genre (except horror), my absolute fave films are documentaries: I see 50+ at Hot Docs every year! That said, I've also seen You've Got Mail more than 100 times (a conservative estimate!) and quote from it almost daily.

Day one of Hot Docs filmgoing! YAAAAY! I got to the Bader with plenty of time to spare, met up with my filmgoing pals and snagged my fave seat. First up was Weiner (7/8), a behind-the- scandal glimpse at the life of former congressman Anthony Weiner as he attempts...

As my Hot Docs 2016 gets underway today – see you in line! – here are a few of the films I managed to see at advance screenings. Ants on a Shrimp (3/8) Let me begin my saying: if you’d like to watch a live snapping turtle be killed...

It is with sheer unbridled enthusiasm that I say: I *lurrrrrrrve* Hot Docs! It’s my absolute favourite film festival… and I’m over the moon that it’s time for another installment! (Where did the last year go?!) The 2016 fest runs from April 28th through May 8th, and welcomes over...

When last we saw Melissa McCarthy on the big screen, she was KILLING IT in Spy as a mild-mannered woman who learns to embrace her inner badass. Think of The Boss as the anti-Spy. Here, not only is the storyline flipped – McCarthy plays a badass who learns to...

As in, why was this film necessary? Why was it made? It’s been more than a decade since My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and I’m not sure that, at this point, anyone was really still clamoring for a sequel… especially not one as dull and clunky as what screenwriter...

And that’s exactly what the pair do for nearly two hours of profane, slapstick-y humor that tips its boozy hat to classics like Animal House, Bachelor Party and others of their ilk, as sisters Kate (Fey) and Maura (Poehler) host one final, epic blowout at the childhood home their...

Anne Hathaway stars as Andy, a bright young grad looking for her first break in journalism. As a last resort, she applies for a position at the uber-prestigious fashion magazine, Runway. She arrives for her interview woefully unaware that she is seeking employment under one of the most powerful...

In the day-in-the-life film, Josh Brolin stars as a fictionalized version of real-life Hollywood studio exec Eddie Mannix, who – to protect Capitol Pictures and the reputations of its talent – spends his days reining in movie stars and covering up their scandals, proclivities and sins. Among the glitterati,...

Based on the true story of an ill-fated 1996 climbing expedition on the titular mountain – during which a violent storm blew in and took the lives of eight climbers – director Baltasar Kormákur’s visually stunning drama is equal parts disaster movie and (non-)survival tale. Jason Clarke stars as...

Sarah Silverman makes her dramatic-lead debut – and does a decent but not outstanding job – in this paint-by-numbers story of a wife and mother trying to hide her drug and alcohol addiction from her family. Unfortunately, Silverman never really seems connected to the character or the material, and...

Virtual unknown Shameik Moore (who’s had a handful of guest-starring spots on TV shows) makes his big-screen leading-role debut as Malcolm, a super-smart, straight-A inner-city-L.A. high schooler with dreams of attending Harvard. He and his best pals, Jib (The Grand Budapest Hotel’s Tony Revolori) and Diggy (Kiersey Clemons), are...

Based on Finkel’s memoir of the same name, True Story centers on Longo, a seemingly upstanding husband and father, who’s accused of murdering his wife and three young children, then fleeing to Mexico, where he’s subsequently apprehended. Once in custody, he identifies himself as Michael Finkel of The New...
