I'm one of Moviepie's staff writers, and I've been reviewing films and film festivals — including TIFF, the (now-defunct) Worldwide Short Film Festival, and Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival — here for more than 20 years. I'm based in Toronto, and although I'll sit through just about any genre (except horror), my absolute fave films are documentaries: I see 50+ at Hot Docs every year! That said, I've also seen You've Got Mail more than 100 times (a conservative estimate!) and quote from it almost daily.

Based on the novel by teen-lit author-god John Green, who also penned the weeper The Fault in Our Stars, this coming-of-age drama starts of well enough, but then quickly devolves into a tedious, uninteresting and, ultimately, irritating exercise that left me feeling duped. It is not the swoony romance...

Redmayne stars as Wegener, who’s madly in love with his painter wife (Vikander) but who finds himself drawn, at first, to women’s clothes then, gradually, masquerading as a woman and calling himself Lili. What begins as folly quickly becomes something more all-consuming for Einar, as he disappears further and...

The always excellent Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as the free-spirited Petit, but is unfortunately saddled with a seriously tragic – and hugely distracting – wig, an even more wobbly French accent and direct-to-camera narration that feels woefully clunky. None help flesh out his character, and all seem needless. Would anyone...

Comedian Louis C.K. voices Max, a plucky terrier who lurrrrrrrves his life with his doting owner Katie (voiced by Ellie Kemper). But when Katie brings home a new “brother” for Max – an oafish mutt named Duke (voiced by Eric Stonestreet) – something of a canine power struggle begins to...

So it should come as no surprise that I think Finding Nemo is a visually stunning, joyfully heartwarming underwater romp that takes the best elements from its Pixar predecessors and moulds them into a colorful, sharply written story that will entertain kids and their parents alike. The action, set...

This biopic of Miracle Mop creator Joy Mangano stars Jennifer Lawrence as the titular single mom, who’s struggling to make ends meet while caring for her kids, her ex (Édgar Ramirez) and her divorced parents (Robert De Niro, Virginia Madsen), who all live in the same dilapidated house and...

Sadly, it’s that time again – time for me to bid adieu to all-day, all-night, wall-to-wall documentaries and line chats and post-film Q&As for another year. Happily, my final day of Hot Doc-ing featured a balance of despair and delight onscreen, with a series of strong films that brought...

One of the nice things about having a media pass to Hot Docs is the ability for the passholder to change his or her mind on the fly. Because there’s no need to book tickets in advance, you can just see where the day (or your mood or the...

After taking the previous night off to rest and recharge, I hit the ground running yesterday for a trio of films that, though it wasn’t planned, all tied together nicely in terms of theme. First up was The Happy Film (6/8), a doc about graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister’s quest...

Here’s how you know it’s perhaps time to slow down and take a break: you’re a film-fest veteran who’s attended Hot Docs for the past 10 years (and TIFF for some 25+ years), but you nonetheless wind up getting into the wrong ticketholders line. Twice. In the same day....

Maybe it was the rain and grey skies, maybe it was the fact that it was a Sunday, but, man – it was like everyone forgot how to behave/work at Hot Docs yesterday. Every screening I attended started late, smartphones repeatedly popped on during films, the new ticket-scanning process...

After the excitement of last night’s awesome Hot Docs experience at the Strike a Pose screening (from which it took me a good couple of hours to decompress), I worried that maybe my 2016 fest peaked too early. Seeing an amazing film early in a festival always sets the bar...
