I'm one of Moviepie's staff writers, and I've been reviewing films and film festivals — including TIFF, the (now-defunct) Worldwide Short Film Festival, and Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival — here for more than 20 years. I'm based in Toronto, and although I'll sit through just about any genre (except horror), my absolute fave films are documentaries: I see 50+ at Hot Docs every year! That said, I've also seen You've Got Mail more than 100 times (a conservative estimate!) and quote from it almost daily.

Where the first Marigold Hotel was about discovery and wonder and evolution and the value of challenging oneself, its successor centers more on courage – namely, the courage to seize opportunity (be it for romance, professional advancement or just a chance to slip away unnoticed) when it presents itself....

I can only assume that the disjointed, scattered, confusing, illogical and, sadly, mostly unentertaining film from writer-director Cameron Crowe somehow fell victim to over-editing or excessive tinkering that ultimately sacrificed, not enhanced or enriched, its story. C’mon, this is the guy who gave us Almost Famous and Jerry Maguire,...

Steve Carell voices Gru, an increasingly irrelevant evildoer who aspires to be the biggest and best badass on the planet by shrinking the moon with a ray gun, and then stealing it from the sky. Standing in his way is the nebbish numero-uno nasty dude, Vector (voiced by Jason...

Set in Los Angeles, the film centers on Alex (Adam Scott) and Emily (Taylor Schilling), a newly-transplanted-from-Seattle husband and wife who, along with their young son, are trying to adjust to life in their new home. A chance encounter at a local park introduces the pair to Kurt (Jason...

Need more? Melissa McCarthy cements her status as a cinematic force to be reckoned with in this super- fun action-comedy from writer-director Paul Feig. In it, she stars as Susan Cooper, a mild- mannered CIA agent who’s been relegated to a desk job while her suave super-spy partner, Bradley...

And that’s a wrap on our coverage of Hot Docs 2015! It was, as ever, an amazing 10 days, filled with fantastic films, insightful Q&As, and plenty of great conversations with my fellow filmgoers while we all waited in line. Kudos to the fest staff and volunteers for all...

Due to some reshuffling of my planned festival schedule over the past week, I wound up with only one film on the final Saturday of the fest. Thankfully, it was a good one. (And it was preceded by me enjoying a tasty ice cream cone, which makes any festival...

As Hot Docs 2015 draws a close, I find more and more directors campaigning for Audience Award votes – but why? I don’t recall anyone doing it in the first few days, but now it’s happening with increased frequency. I have to wonder if the fest’s decision to post...

The festival is slowly winding down, and a full week of non-stop film-going is starting to catch up with me – I’m getting pooped! But there are still a bunch of docs to see and only three days left to see ‘em. Yesterday, I started out with a film...

Let’s pause for a moment to thank Mother Nature for the SPECTACULAR weather during Hot Docs so far – So nice! And, based on the extended forecast, it’s going to continue right through the end of the fest. No umbrellas! No sitting through films while wearing damp clothes! It’s...

Sometimes, when a Hot Docs screening is poorly attended, as an audience member you wind up being part of a small but privileged group that discovers something magical (see: my experience at Keep On Keepin’ On last year). However, as I discovered yesterday, other times it means you actually...

On Sunday, I proved to myself that, after years of film-festival going (Hot Docs, TIFF, WSFF, et al.), I’ve still got the stamina to make it through a four-screening day unscathed and not completely exhausted. Yay! That said, I opted not to push my luck, so yesterday I chose...
