March 5, 2018–Well everyone, it’s a wrap! Thank goodness for everyone (except maybe the ratings) that there wasn’t another Oscar-level flub with an envelope mix-up like last year. The rather uneventful and somewhat predictable telecast still stood out for making a notable effort to acknowledge the #metoo movement and overall inclusiveness, pushing for diversity in Hollywood.
Shaking it up a little allowed the event to avoid more awkward moments. For instance, last year’s Best Actor winner would traditionally have presented this year’s Best Actress award. But with Casey Affleck having gone off the grid dealing with his own sexual misconduct allegations, it was better in many ways to have past badass winners Jodie Foster and Jennifer Lawrence present the award. (Our Oscar party couldn’t help commenting on their height difference, making it seem like something was not to scale on the TV!)
Considering the political climate, the telecast was surprisingly politically muted, other than many shout-outs to Dreamers and immigrants (and a pointed rap by Common). Look at the representation of Mexico, Britain, Kenya, Pakistan, and more, just in the more visible nominees and presenters. There may not have been many surprises in the winners, but after last year, that probably brought a sigh of relief from the Academy when the last award was handed out successfully.
Note to the show’s producers: If you want to liven things up, please get Tiffany Haddish and Maya Rudolph to host next year’s event. They were HI-LA-RI-OUS!
